Three Websites That Will Make You Smarter Instantly

Recently on Forward2All, an article featured five websites that are notorious time-drainers. As more and more people become connected to the Internet, we are constantly inundated by rather inane websites that do waste our time, adding little value beyond its distraction capabilities. However, not all is doom and gloom. The following sites are great venues for those who are looking to become more aware of the world at large and how it works in a more efficient manner.

1. Newser

The Internet is rife with news websites, and many times, we don’t really know which source is the “best” or how we are to keep track of any current event at all. So much is going on in the world, and we have less and less time to stay abreast. Instead of reading through long articles on a handful of news websites, check out Newser. Newser is a platform that aggregates current events from hundreds of newspapers and sorts them by their level of interest and popularity. Each news story is presented in a two paragraph, easy-to-read format, with links to the original story source. In this format, you can get the main idea of hundreds of events going in the world, and if you want a more in-depth idea, you can always click on the links to read the full article. It’s that easy.

2. Stumble Upon

Stumble Upon is one of the fastest-growing, social media-connected web platforms out there today. Stumble Upon allows you to set your preferences by interest in various topics. Hit the “Stumble Upon” button, and you’ll get a random selection of the best of the Internet that has serious content directly related to your interests. Stumble Upon allows users to cut back on the random Googling and Internet surfing, enabling you to skip all the junk and get right to the bottom of what matters to you. From serious categories like “alternative news” to academic categories like “archaeology” to more entertaining topics like “celebrities”, Stumble Upon allows you to input virtually any interest or hobby.

3. Wikipedia

Okay, okay. Wikipedia may indeed have a bad reputation in academic circles, but there’s nothing quite like Wikipedia to enable you to get information fast on virtually any topic. Links within articles allow users to quickly access related materials, and similarly to Newser, you can find full-length sources at the bottom of entries, so if you do want a more in-depth picture of what you read, you can easily get there.

Let’s face it–the Internet is full of junk, and while we do waste plenty of time chatting with our friends on sites like Facebook, we can always make some time to become a little more knowledgeable about the goings-on in our world. While the above three sites are certainly no substitute for reading longer sources of information like books, if you are squeezed for time but still want to be up-to-date, then be sure to have a look.
