Google yourself an rcon
Google and other well known search engines have long become the staple places for many users to search out any information that their heart desires. Infact without such services the internet would be a much duller place.
As we all know Google hops around the web gathering as much information as it can from various websites, scouting around in the files and archiving them up in one big friendly search engine to help us, the public, find the information that we`re looking for.
Now this is where the problem starts. When search engines index the files on your website they`re also very good as taking snapshots of folders which are web accessible but contain no web browser specific files, eg; html, php and other such files.
When a web accessible directory has no such files then in the majority of cases the folder becomes accessible as a directory listing with all files on view. With this on view a search engine will snapshot the directory and its contents.
One instance of this as server admins is when mod folders or redirection space isn`t secured and the directory listing is visible to the outside world. Now generally this isn`t much of an issue and the majority of times this won`t occur but on a good number of occasions either the game service provider is leaving these directories visable or admins are uploading files that aren`t required to redirect space.
So how are we googling an rcon you may ask?
A file that is created each time you start your server is called “console_mp.log” in this file it logs all the commands that are issued to the console. When a server is started all the usual setup type commands are issued to allow your server to work and set the various variables that make your server run how you want it to. Now one of these commands it needs to set is “rcon_password” as specified in your server.cfg file.
So in certain cases we now have a file called console_mp.log that contains the value of rcon_password, in simple terms it contains your rcon password.
While Google and other friendly search engines are scouring the internet they are sometimes picking up your web accessible mods folder and archiving the console_mp.log as part of the contents of your folder.
Now this is where the trouble begins; A quick search of google for console_mp.log or for a more specific search “console_mp.log” returns a vast number of pages with access to a range of Quake Engine based console log files, namely Call of Duty 4 and 5.
